Pictured is the Dying Swan. Created
in 2000 Judith Lanigan’s solo piece ‘The Dying Swan’ is a hula hoop act
based on the ballet divertissement choreographed by Fokine for Anna Pavlova
in the early 20th century. Using hoop skills learnt at the Moscow State
Circus School and contemporary clown techniques, the Dying Swan has played
at many international Arts and Street Theatre festivals, Comedy and

Judith Lanigan has also published a comprehensive study
of the Hula Hoop, its history, influences, development and artistes which
includes an illustrated ‘How to’ from Beginners to Advanced. ‘The Hula
Hoop’ Judith Lanigan writes and dramaturges circus for performance,
particularly show structure, which allows for the use of skill specific,
and clown specific acts. Her work is usually based on historical research
and her training in contemporary clown gives her a particular interest
in creating show structures and storyline that allow for the essential
nature of the clown character.
